COOKING IN YEAR 6

Our learning experience in cooking has been amazing. We have made pretzels, chow mein and many more exciting dishes. During cooking lessons, we each get a role: for example, some people had to knead the dough for our pretzels. Every dish had different roles but most of the roles involved chopping ingredients. It was useful as we got to watch other people have a go before doing it ourselves. The dish that had the most chopping was probably the chow mein or the vegetarian paella.
While we wait for the dishes to cook, we write out the recipe that we have followed. It means that we have all of the recipes in our DT books. We also talk about anD write out the nutritional values. This tells you how many grams of each food group there is in a dish so that you can see whether it is healthy or not. Some dishes take longer to cook than others but the dish that took the most time was probably the pretzels. We made the dough in the morning and then had to leave it for 2 hours to rise. It doubled in size and then we got to turn the dough into the pretzel shape, before they were baked.
Whenever we make a new dish, we all get so excited to try it every DT lesson. At the end of each lesson, we have to evaluate the dish. To do his, we answer questions such as ‘how difficult was the dish to prepare?’ and we have to discuss the parts of the dish we did or didn’t enjoy. My favourite dish was probably the chow mein, even though I usually don’t enjoy Chinese food much. I loved it when we made it in class as I enjoyed the taste of all of the ingredients. The pretzel was very good as well – 10/10.
